Physical Indicators

unexplained bruises (in various stages of healing), human bite marks, bald spots, unexplained burns (esp. from cigarettes), unexplained fractures, cuts or abrasions, difficulty walking or sitting

Behavioural Indicators

self-destructive, withdrawn, aggressive – behavioural extremes, uncomfortable with physical contact, arrives at school early or stays late – as if to avoid being home, running away, complains of soreness, wears clothing inappropriate to weather in order to hide body

Physical Indicators

torn, stained or bloody clothing particularly undergarments, pain or itching in genital area, difficulty walking or sitting, bruises or bleeding in external genitalia, venereal disease, frequent urinary or yeast infections, pregnancy

Behavioural Indicators

withdrawn, chronic depression, excessive seductiveness, role reversal – overly concerned for siblings, poor self-esteem, self-devaluation, lack of confidence, peer problems – lack of involvement, massive weight change, suicide attempts (esp. adolescents), hysteria, lack of emotional control, sudden school difficulties, inappropriate sex play or premature understanding of sexual subjects, threatened by physical contact, promiscuity, inappropriate displays of affection, sudden reluctance to accompany certain individuals places, sudden use of sexual terms or new names for body parts, discomfort or rejection of typical family affection, runs away from home, sleep problems – including insomnia, nightmares, refusal to sleep alone or sudden insistence on a nightlight, regressive “infantile” behaviours including thumb sucking, bedwetting, or other signs of dependency, extremely clingy or shows other signs of fearfulness, sudden changes in personality, bizarre or unusual sophistication pertaining to sexual behaviour including, sexual acting out, reports sexual assault by parent, guardian, teacher or other adult figure

Physical Indicators

speech disorders, delayed physical development, substance abuse, eating disorders, ulcers, asthma, severe allergies, thumb sucking, bedwetting

Behavioural Indicators

habit disorders – sucking, rocking, antisocial, destructive, neurotic traits, sleep disorders, inhibition of play – finding it hard to make friends, behavioural extremes – passive and aggressive, pushy and hostile, avoids doing things with other children and being places where it is expected s/he be loving, delinquent behaviour (esp. adolescents), developmentally delayed, acts falsely grown up – having to care for adults or others far beyond what should be expected for the child’s age, gloomy and depressed – unable to find enjoyment, self-destructive, self-injuring or even attempts at suicide

Physical Indicators

abandonment, unattended medical needs, constant lack of supervision, consistent hunger, inappropriate dress – to the weather or age group, poor hygiene, distended stomach, emaciated

Behavioural Indicators

regularly displays fatigue or listlessness, falls asleep in class, steals food, begs from classmates, reports no caretaker at home, frequently absent or late, poor grades, school dropout
